    • About Ubud

The trip to Ubud is a time change; from stone dwellings of antiquity to a current center of fine arts. Located approximately 20 kilometers from Denpasar, the capital city of Bali and famous for its community of artists, Ubud is a special place in more ways than one. It has its own magic and its particularly beautiful surroundings and gracious way of life has been a lure to artists and tourist from all over the world. For many years, Ubud has been a Mecca for foreign and local artists who are encaptured by the creative atmosphere in this part of Bali. Some have stayed, such as Rudolf Bonnet, Arie Smit, Hans Snel and Antonio Blanco. Although Ubud’s main street is lined with shops selling all manners of paintings, carvings, weavings and bric-a-brac, the surrounding villages and country side are as charming as ever. Now many tourists like to make Ubud home while in Bali and travel out from there. The terrace rice fields and waterfalls in nearby gorges invite one to leave transport behind and set off on foot.

The best-known walks are to the monkey forest, just south of Ubud. Agreat tree straddles the nearby gorges on the path down to a delightful bathing place. The road south through Padangtegal leads on to Pengosekan, a village of painters since the 1930s. It is well known for the varied and individual style of its artists and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974.

Ubud serves well both the traveler who wants to get about and those who prefer a quiet relaxing stay.
